Committee member Stephen McArdle and his friend Mike Salter (from Crediton, Devon) decided to cycle along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, the full length, and continue on to Hull and the East coast. The two met at the University of Liverpool where they studied Geology for 4 years, completing their studies a few weeks ago. While organising the trip, they decided it would be a good idea to raise some money for a worthwhile cause.
Stephen writes:
'We set off from the new canal link at the Liver Buildings last
Thursday morning (4th June) at 10am.
We cycled 55 miles on the first day and camped at a place
called Wheelton. We
should thank the farmer for letting us use his field and the superb
hospitality shown at the Top Lock pub!
The next day we passed the half way point and ended up in Skipton, Yorkshire for the night, a further 65 miles.
We arried in Leeds, making it to the end of the canal on Saturday afternoon, having cycled 153.44 miles. The canal towpath route was excellent, we enjoyed all the sights along the way, as well as chatting with all the people we met, either on foot or on their canal boats, many of whom were heading for Liverpool to witness the new canal section in all its glory. We spent the day with friends from University seeing the sights of Leeds and spent the night in very comfortable beds at our friend's house.
After a day of rest, we set off for Hull on Monday morning, stopping off in York for lunch along the way. We arrived in Hull on Monday evening, and set off for Kilnsea the following day, which would be our final stop. We camped there Tuesday night and after seeing the magnificent sights of Kilnsea and Spurn point, set off back for Hull train station and home on Wednesday evening. In total we cycled 287.24 miles, from the West coast at the River Mersey to the East coast at the River Humber.
We have raised over £200 for the Boxer dog health fund, and would like to thank everyone who has donated money to this great cause.'
